Research
AirFlute is built on original research in music information retrieval and real-time audio DSP.
Making an instrument out of an untrained voice is mostly a research problem: amateur singing is expressive but imprecise, and the interesting question is how to recover the melody a singer intended from the notes they actually produced.
Ongoing work behind the app includes:
- Real-time monophonic pitch tracking on mobile devices, robust to octave errors and vocal fry;
- Note segmentation and re-articulation detection in continuous, sliding vocal lines;
- Statistical models of amateur intonation — where pitch error concentrates, how it differs across singers, and which per-singer traits are stable across melodies. Recent studies use public corpora such as MIR-QBSH and Vocadito (≈48,000 sung notes, ≈200 singers);
- Intended-note decoding: combining pitch evidence with musicological priors to transcribe what the singer meant, not just what the microphone heard.
Looking for data. We are actively seeking corpora of amateur singing with repeated performances by the same singer (such as the Smule DAMP datasets), to study the stability of individual intonation profiles.
